Blog #8 DLU Reflection

Diverse Learner Unit Project – Overall, how did it go? What did you learn? How will making accommodations (and getting serious about it) affect how you will (do) plan for your future teaching?     You cannot accommodate all kids all of the time, but quality, constructivist classrooms get close...varying instruction and differentiating learning is the best you can often do. How do you think focusing on creating the most effective lessons possible can help the most students? How did doing this unit facilitate that kind of learning and teaching?

  1. Overall, I feel I did well on my DLU. I learned that I can accommodate for several students at once and thought of more accommodations for certain things than I thought I was able to. Making accommodations and being serious about them will require me to put more time into my lessons plans. I felt my lessons would be the most effective if they were more hands on. This helps more students because they are allowed to be more creative and are more likely to remember what they learned as a result. This unit facilitated creating effective lesson plans and accommodations by having us create our own lesson.

    1. I do agree with you when you say that you learned how to accommodate for more students at once. I just loved getting the freedom to make my own unit and like you said you made yours so your students could have hands on learning.

    2. It is nice that we do not have to make lessons that are boring and we have a certain freedom that can be exciting and fun to teach and make. I know as a student that I would have loved to not been lectured too and I wish that my teachers made the accommodations that we had to so that class was not boring and hit a variety of learners.

    3. It is good you incorporated a lot of hands on learning as it is shown that tends to be the most effective learning. Having a wide variety in your pocket to pull out is good also because different classes respond differently. I have 3 classes of computer apps this year and it amazes me how they each have a different personality as a whole if you will. They each respond to different activities differently. And it has flip flopped since the first day of school. I thought I had it figured out and they didn't turn out the way I thought.

  2. Overall, I feel like I did good. I thought that this whole process was fun and getting to create my own unit plan was harder than I thought it was going to be. I did enjoy it though, I feel like I got a good grasp on what I will be doing as a teacher in the future. I learned so many things not only this week, but during the whole class. I learned that I may not be able to accommodate every student I have, but I will be able reach most of the students, and now knowing all the different things that I will have to accommodate for, I can be more prepared to do so in class. I will be able to make lessons that will be able to reach the most students possible. I think that making accommodations affect how you I will plan for my future teaching because I will put more effort into my plans, and make sure that all of my students are learning what I need them to learn. I just like the aspect of getting to create my own unit plan and taking the time to think on my own, on what to accommodate for. It really just got my brain thinking, and I just loved it!

    1. I agree, this whole class was definitely useful and full of valuable information. This end project was good too for our future teacher knowledge and I think it will change how we all make plans from here on out.

    2. Faith, having this in place prior to teaching is going to help you so much. I have a TAC so I had the content knowledge but am just now learning all of this. My lesson planning will be so much easier knowing this so I encourage you to do this for all units when you start teaching, then years afterwards will seem like a breeze!

  3. Overall, I think it went just okay. It was definitely a learning process to do and I thought it was difficult. I understand creating lessons and units will come easier with repetition but it was for sure a good learning experience and I can only get better. I learned that accommodating can be difficult but is necessary and will get easier the more that gets done. It is hard to accommodate for everyone every lesson and I think that was stressful trying to do. I had no clue what to do for some of the learning accommodations. I think that most of my future plans will be based around accommodations instead of making the plan and then trying to accommodate, that is way harder.

    1. This was defiantly hard you have that right! But you are right, you can only get better at making lesson plans and with repetition like you said it will be come easier. I also like how you said you were going to make plans based on accommodations, rather then make them and have to accommodate.

    2. Speaking from experience since I am currently teaching, you are right, this is hard and it does get easier. Accommodating everyone is very stressful but having some game plan in place prior to the start of the unit will help. Just like in sports, it is modify the game plan during the game than create a whole new one after the game starts. Otherwise coaches wouldn't scout upcoming opponents. Taking that same approach to teaching pays off just as well!

  4. This was a challenging assignment but then again this is what effective teachers do and that is what makes this job so challenging. I think a lot of people think teaching is easy as long as you know the content. Knowing the content is just the tip of the iceberg. Addressing all learners takes a lot of time and this is what keeps me up at night. Doing this unit helped me feel more in control of how I can help the learners and to be looking for more learning types. Definitely having this in place and taking the back end approach is helpful. Each time I teach this, I can add a modification that I learn to help all learners.

    1. It was challenging but you are right, this is what effective teachers do, they try to accommodate every student even though it is hard on them. I like what you said about how you think people think teaching is easy, because I know when I told a bunch of my friends I wanted to be a teacher, most of them said "oh that is so easy" or "why would you do that, it is way to easy to become a teacher". Many people do not realize the amount of stress teachers put on themselves to be able to teach every student.
